Watch the full review here.\r\n \r\n Genesis' sixth studio album was released as a double album in November 1974 by Charisma Records and is the last to feature original frontman Peter Gabriel. The group's longest album to date, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway peaked at No. 10 on the U.K. Albums Chart and N° 41 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S..\r\n \r\n The album is a concept album and tells the surreal story, devised by Gabriel, of a young Puerto Rican named Rael who embarks on a journey through a series of strange and bizarre events in New York City.\r\n \r\n Musically, the album is a departure from the band's previous works, incorporating a wide range of styles including progressive rock, art rock, funk, and jazz fusion. The album features complex rhythms, intricate melodies, and dense layers of instrumentation, showcasing the band's virtuosic musicianship.\r\n \r\n The album is notable for its use of storytelling, with each track contributing to the larger narrative of Rael's journey. The lyrics are often cryptic and abstract, and the album's surreal imagery has been interpreted in a variety of ways by listeners and critics.\r\n \r\n The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway gained acclaim in the years after its release, reaching gold certification for sales in the U.K. and U.S.. In 1978, Nick Kent wrote for NME that it "had a compelling appeal that often transcended the hoary weightiness of the mammoth concept that held the equally mammoth four sides of vinyl together." In a special edition of Q and Mojo magazines titled Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, The Lamb ranked at N° 14 in its 40 Cosmic Rock Albums list. The album came third in a list of the 10 best concept albums by Uncut magazine, where it was described as an "impressionistic, intense album" and "pure theatre (in a good way) and still Gabriel's best work." A Rolling Stone poll to rank readers' favourite progressive rock albums of all time placed The Lamb fifth in the list.\r\n \r\n The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is widely regarded as one of Genesis's most important and influential works, inspiring generations of progressive rock musicians. Having spent an entire year on the charts after its March 1973 release, the band's third record features one classic after another. Not to mention an even-keeled balance between gritty rock fare and mellow balladry that highlights the group's chemistry and songwriting prowess. And a guest turn on pedal steel by Steely Dan alum Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, who’d officially crack the Doobie Brothers’ lineup the following year. \r\n \r\n Sourced from the original analog master tapes, pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing in California, and housed in a Stoughton gatefold jacket, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered-edition 180 gram 45 RPM (2 LP) presents The Captain and Me in definitive sound. Given the luxurious room of a 45 RPM version for the first time and benefiting from the wider grooves, the music unfolds amid large soundstages replete with ultra-quiet backgrounds, vivid dynamics, and sharp imaging. Ted Templeman’s excellent production charms like never before. \r\n \r\n The organic sonics of The Captain and Me demonstrate why myriad listeners swear allegiance to 70s recordings. Facets that help make the album so welcoming voices that naturally rise and fall, notes that properly carry and decay, bass lines you can trace from beginning to end, well-placed percussive accents, warm tones, defined separation between the players come across on this collectible reissue with involving presence, openness, and realism. Everything sounds crisp and clear. Nothing is overdone or out of place, even with the addition of strings and synthesizers in places. \r\n \r\n No wonder why The Captain and Me stands as one the feel-good California quintet's signature works. Balanced between Tom Johnston's harder-edged contributions and Patrick Simmons' rustic excursions, the album displays a stunning array of high harmonies and interlocking rhythms. Laidback yet engaged, the stylistic combination belies the Doobies' roots as a Northern California bar band that played at afternoon jam sessions for members of the Hells Angels and parallels its evolution into a more polished, confident collective on par with mainstream peers the Eagles and the Allman Brothers Band.\r\n \r\n Such biker-meets-beach mentality informs the lead-off "Natural Thing" a midtempo tune that feeds of the tension between the acoustic and electric guitars while showing off the the band’s then-new incorporation of ARP synthesizers and on the skyward title track, which builds in energy as it moves towards a climax. And of course, there's the Top 15 smash "China Grove" and Top 10 hit "Long Train Runnin'". Each pop-rock hallmark rides memorable guitar riffs into the sunset. Each conjures the liberating feelings of wind blowing through your hair and three-day weekends. Each never gets old. \r\n \r\n By keeping their craft deceptively simple and thoroughly enjoyable, the Doobies understand music is supposed to be fun and that it needs to groove. And groove and sway The Captain and Me does without fail. You could say it keeps on movin’. Another key reason for its ageless charm : The playing of pianist Bill Payne. The Little Feat member appears on five cuts, including the romantic “South City Midnight Lady” (along with Baxter), polyrhythmic “Without You”, and blues corker “Dark Eyed Cajun Woman”. \r\n \r\n You’d likely never guess the Doobie Brothers made The Captain and Me under the pressures associated with a quick turnaround time and demands for a set that would prove its prior LP wasn’t a fluke. More than two million copies in sales, two massive singles, and Top 10 chart status did more than that. The Captain and Me sent the band on its way to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame stature and permanent standing as one of the great rock ‘n’ roll bands of its time. Records in 1971. The album was recorded over a two-week period in December 1970, in two different Memphis studios (one was Ardent Studios, where Big Star later recorded their influential power pop albums). His producer was none other than London-born Peter Asher, who had just produced James Taylor's early hits for the label (he would continue to produce hits for Taylor and Linda Ronstadt on his way to becoming one of the most successful producers of the '70s).\r\n \r\n AllMusic describes the songs on Tony Joe White as "standard and straightforward... White's husky southern warble remains the album's key focus. Still, White digs into the turbulence of the late '60s and early '70s with both heart and heat.\r\n \r\n "The Change" sets the tone, a smoky, spoken-word sermon that taps into the era's yearning for progress. "I Just Walked Away" (the album's standout single) balances Southern funk and raw emotional punch, while "The Daddy" and "Five Summers for Jimmy" reveal White's tender, introspective side. The autobiographical "A Night in the Life of a Swamp Fox" closes the album with a nod to the man behind the myth a road-weary musician caught between fame and freedom.\r\n \r\n Tony Joe White stands as a defining moment for one of music's most distinctive voices a swamp-rock masterpiece steeped in social reflection and Southern soul, raw and timelessly American. Van Morrison's 1968 masterpiece defies genre, while rewarding listeners with new emotional and musical discoveries. It's a fusion of folk, jazz improvisation, and ethereal soul that transports the listener to another realm. Often regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time, Astral Weeks doesn't fit neatly into any category. It's Morrison's most emotional vocal performance his voice soars, whispers, and wails, delivering poetic lyrics with an intensity that feels deeply personal yet universally resonant.\r\n \r\n With upright bass, flute, vibraphone, and acoustic guitar weaving hypnotic textures, the album's organic, free-flowing arrangements create an unparalleled sense of atmosphere. Morrison's stream-of-consciousness lyrics paint vivid, mystical portraits of youth, love, nostalgia, and longing. Tracks such as "Madame George" and "Cyprus Avenue" are cinematic in their storytelling.\r\n \r\n Van Morrison fans will immediately recognize Astral Weeks as his most adventurous and soul-baring work. It's not just music-it's a meditative, dreamlike journey that lingers long after the final note fades.\r\n \r\n Lacquers cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab at 45 RPM (Mastered from a flat 24/192 digital transfer of the original master tape.
