The tracks on this album, taken from three different sessions of 1957-58 vintage, show John Coltrane's keen interest in young jazz talent. The title piece was composed by McCoy Tyner, still a teenager at the time and more than two years away from his key role in Coltrane's working quartet. Another high school student, Ray Draper, is featured on two bonus tracks added to the program of the original LP, which find Coltrane forming half of an unusual tuba/tenor sax front line.\n

"Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful" includes one of the earliest recorded solos by Freddie Hubbard, in the first of his studio collaborations with Coltrane. There are other treats, including the always sparkling Red Garland and a composition by the underrated Calvin Massey; but the main event as always is Coltrane, who turns in particularly explosive work on the two January 1958 quintet titles that have Donald Byrd on trumpet. With Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Louis Hayes, Freddie Hubbard, Arthur Taylor, Ray Draper, Gil Coggins, Spanky DeBrest and Larry Ritchie.\n

-description: "John Coltrane's Prestige years began when he joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955. Durning the next few years, when he was either with Davis or the Thelonious Monk Quartet, he functioned as both leader and sideman for this label. These recordings documnet the first part of his relatively short but highly influential time in the spotlight. Lush Life, a combination of standards and blues, treated in the unique Coltrane manner- sound wedded to material in a completely personal way contains three tracks without a piano. This is the first time he recorded in this manner, other than when Monk was "strolling", and it offers another aspect from, and of Coltrane.\n"

The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was' admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a.k.a. the "Tone Poet", on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.\r\n
      \r\n
John Coltrane's groundbreaking Blue Train will be released in two special editions on September 16 as part of Blue Note's acclaimed Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series.\r\n
      \r\n
A mono pressing of the original album on 180 gram vinyl will be presented in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.\r\n
      \r\n
"Few studio experiences I've had can compare with the thrill of listening to the original master tapes-mono, stereo and alternate takes-of Blue Train", says Harley. "I consider these two new versions the definitive editions of this masterpiece performance by John Coltrane".\r\n
      \r\n
Blue Train came at a pivotal moment in Coltrane's career. Earlier in 1957, the saxophonist had hit bottom when his heroin addiction caused him to be fired from the Miles Davis Quintet. But after kicking his habit, Coltrane returned with a fervor inspired by an extended summer residency with Thelonious Monk at the Five Spot Café.\r\n
      \r\n
By the end of the year, Coltrane had been rehired by Davis and had produced his first masterwork, an album that even he was deeply proud of. As Kahn recounts in his essay : "Blue Train was a recording that Coltrane, ever self-critical and modest, held in high regard. In 1960, while on tour with Miles Davis for the last time, a Swedish deejay asked Coltrane what he favored from his catalog and he immediately responded : ‘Oh, I like Blue Train myself. It's a good band on there, you know. It was a good recording'".

John Coltrane returns to his roots using the Blues to explore the boundaries of Jazz! Features McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis and Elvin Jones! Recorded in 1960 during the My Favorite Things sessions, Coltrane Plays The Blues features "Blues To Bechet", "Blues To Elvin" and "Blues To You" in addition to three other tracks. \r\n
      \r\n
"Coltrane's sessions for Atlantic in late October 1960 were prolific, yielding the material for My Favorite Things, Coltrane Plays the Blues, and Coltrane's Sound. My Favorite Things was destined to be the most remembered and influential of these, and while Coltrane Plays the Blues is not as renowned or daring in material, it is still a powerful session. As for the phrase "plays the blues" in the title, that's not an indicator that the tunes are conventional blues (they aren't). It's more indicative of a bluesy sensibility, whether he is playing muscular saxophone or, on "Blues to Bechet" and "Mr. Syms," the more unusual sounding (at the time) soprano sax. Elvin Jones, who hadn't been in Coltrane's band long, really busts out on the quicker numbers, such as "Blues to You" and "Mr. Day". - Richie Unterberger, www.allmusic.com \r\n
      \r\n
"The Coltrane Quartet, three-fourths complete at the time of this recording, had begun its historic rise and had also turned the corner in Coltrane's music, transitioning from the expressive verticality of Giant Steps to the more elongated, long-limbed lyricism that would define his role in the avant-garde. It can come as no surprise that to do so, he engaged the material he'd known longest and best - the blues". - Neil Tesser, author of The Playboy Guide To Jazz

Released in 1964, Crescent is one of sax master John Coltrane's finest albums, featuring the talents of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. During 1964 John Coltrane spent the least amount of time in the recording studio of his entire solo career. It wasn't until April 27 that ‘Trane, along with Tyner, Garrison and Jones went to the familiar surroundings of Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliff's studio to begin work on the album that came to be called, Crescent.\r\n
      \r\n
They recorded all the tracks that appear on Crescent, along with "Songs Of Praise", but not the final versions of the album's five tracks. From that first day's recording the ones that make the final cut are, "Lonnie's Lament", "The Drum Thing" and "Wise One". The first two of these three tracks make up all of side two of the album and on "Lonnie's Lament" Coltrane does not solo at all, instead it features a long bass solo by Garrison.\r\n
      \r\n
Garrison's widow recalled that this album along with A Love Supreme, which was released a year later in 1965, were the two that her husband listened to the most.\r\n

Seeking to offer definitive audiophile grade versions of some of the most historic and best jazz records ever recorded, Verve Label Group and Universal Music Enterprises' new audiophile Acoustic Sounds vinyl reissue series utilizes the skills of top mastering engineers and the unsurpassed production craft of Quality Record Pressings. All titles are mastered from the original analog tapes, pressed on 180 gram vinyl and packaged by Stoughton Printing Co. in high-quality gatefold sleeves with tip-on jackets. The releases are supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, the world's largest source for audiophile recordings.\r\n
      \r\n
John Coltrane's immortal Impulse ! records, A Love Supreme (1964) and Ballads (1963) both have drawn rave reviews since their original release. A.B. Spellman, former administrator for the National Endowment for the Arts, once described Ballads as "some of the most sensitive, heartfelt music that any lover ever sang on a horn". Put simply, most guys don't play the saxophone like John Coltrane.\r\n
      \r\n
The intense passionate Coltrane interpretation of standards such as "All Or Nothing At All", "What's New", "It's Easy To Remember" and the Sinatra classic "Nancy (With The Laughing Face)" are the essence of Ballads.\r\n
      \r\n
While it may have been a short detour by Trane before he exploded off into the nether regions of jazz music a few years later, it is still a fantastic document of one of the premier jazz groups of the 1960s.\r\n
      \r\n
      Recorded December 21, 1961 and September 18 & November 13, 1962 at Rudy Van Gelder Studios.\r\n
      \r\n
"It's impossible to sleepwalk through tracks like "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "I Wish I Knew" and impart them with even a fraction of the emotional heft that the Quartet achieves. This is the type of jazz album in which the music just washes over the listener with it's restrained grace and beauty, and while it may not have the adventurousness that some listeners think Trane should have had each and every time he recorded, I'd say it shows off a side of him that only makes us appreciate his more bold and daring albums even more". - The Jazz Record \r\n

Newly Discovered Late 1965 Live Recording of Trane's Magnum Opus A Love Supreme Produced by Engineer Kevin Reeves with Extensive Liner Notes by Music Historian Ashley Kahn !\r\n
      \r\n
After nearly six decades, a private recording of a rare, nightclub performance by John Coltrane of his magnum opus, A Love Supreme, is available for the first time on vinyl 2 LP courtesy of Impulse Records ! Recorded in late 1965 on the culminating evening of a historic week-long run at The Penthouse in Seattle, A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle is a musical revelation of historic importance, capturing Coltrane as he began to expand his classic quartet adding Pharoah Sanders on second saxophone and Donald Garrett on second bass and catapulting him into the intense, spiritually focused final phase of his career.\r\n
      \r\n
The significance of A Love Supreme : Live In Seattle is heightened by the fact that Coltrane seldom performed his four-part suite after originally recording it in the studio in 1964. Composed and created as a public declaration of his personal spiritual beliefs and universalist sentiment, it became a best-seller and received a Grammy nod the next year. For more than six decades, it seemed the only recorded public performance of A Love Supremetook place at a French festival at Juan-Les-Pins in July 1965 and was released almost twenty years ago. The tape reels containing this performance from October 1965 sat in the private collection of Seattle saxophonist and educator Joe Brazil, heard by a few fortunate musicians and friends and largely unknown until now.\r\n
      \r\n
A Love Supreme : Live In Seattle is a fascinating and rare performance of the full suite, marked by a looser and more improvisational approach, and a overriding sense of communal participation – much like a Sunday church service; the lineup featured John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders on saxophones, McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums, and Jimmy Garrison and Donald (Rafael) Garrett on basses. Carlos Ward, then a young saxophonist just getting started on the scene, sat in as well.\r\n
      \r\n
As music historian Ashley Kahn puts it in the liner notes, A Love Supreme : Live In Seattle "offers the first evidence of the master of spiritual expression performing his signature work in the close confines of a jazz club... on October 2, 1965, a Saturday, in Seattle, the necessary elements were in alignment : music, players, venue, a spirit of connection, a certain political charge. Coltrane chose to perform it, and significantly, the moment was recorded". Kahn's extensive liner notes tell the story not only through the words of the musicians themselves, but also through a number of witnesses whose lives were changed by Coltrane's visit to Seattle in 1965 (his sole visit to the city as a leader), including Brazil, Ward, and bassist David Friesen, who states : "I've always pursued the spiritual aspect of the music and I still do. I remember sitting with Coltrane during one break that week and... what touched me was the way he treated other people. He showed mercy and kindness to people from what I could see around me for the week that I was there".\r\n
      \r\n
The music on A Love Supreme : Live In Seattle was recorded with a two-microphone set-up onstage, connected to an Ampex reel-to-reel machine, and the only copies of the tapes were well cared for, yielding a remarkably clear and distortion-free recording. "What's remarkable is that tapes from this era often suffer over the years from heat or moisture damage, or simply being stacked horizontally", writes engineer Kevin Reeves who produced this release. "However, these tapes are in excellent condition... and the results are among the best amateur recordings of John Coltrane we've had the pleasure to work on".\r\n
The story of the A Love Supreme suite is the story of John Coltrane his musical journey, and his spiritual path. It has become one of the most celebrated and influential recordings to come out of the jazz canon, revered and studied by musicians far beyond the jazz realm. Rolling Stone magazine consistently lists it among the top albums of all time. "Of his many musical creations, Coltrane looked upon A Love Supreme in a very special light", Kahn notes in the liner notes to A Love Supreme : Live In Seattle : "He called A Love Supreme a ‘humble offering to the Divine; no other composition or recording was similarly offered nor did he append his signature to any other work. A Love Supreme was as much an individual testament as it was a public statement – a sermon of universalist belief". \r\n
      \r\n
A Love Supreme : Live In Seattle now expands the story of both a great musician and a timeless piece of music !\r\n

    -nom: "Olé Coltrane"

    -description: """
Mastered from the original analog tapes and cut at 45 RPM by Bernie Grundman !\r\n
      \r\n
180 gram vinyl pressing by Pallas in Germany !\r\n
      \r\n
Engineered by Phil Ramone, featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet !\r\n
      \r\n
John Coltrane's final album for Atlantic bookends the exploratory motifs he explores on his Impulse! debut, Africa / Brass, recorded concurrently, with each involving knotty rhythmic shifts and Spanish-derived textures. Bonding with an amazing band that includes pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and an uncredited Eric Dolphy (due to contractual reasons), Coltrane welcomes improvisations and ranging outside conventional parameters, all the while retaining melodic beauty.\r\n
      \r\n
Yet the biggest attraction on this 1961 effort comes via the double-bass interplay between Art Davis and Reggie Workman, whose back-and-forth exchanges produce heat and cause the leader to up his own game. Mastered from the original master tapes, this dead-quiet 180 gram 45 RPM double LP set presents each pluck of the acoustic basses with tremendous body and decay. Long overdue for audiophile treatment, Olé Coltrane is ready for its closeup, and how. \r\n
