A few highlights to whet your aural whistle : 1) Mike Rutherford's high-pitched, 12-string acoustic guitarwork and the overall rise/fall drama of "The Musical Box" (LP 1, Side 1, Track 1, November 1971's Nursery Cryme). 2) The full majesty of Tony Banks' lengthy piano intro (and outro !) and Steve Hackett's career-defining guitar solo on "Firth of Fifth" (LP 1, Side 2, Track 1, September 1973's Selling England by the Pound). 3) Peter Gabriel's pleading lead vocals and Phil Collins' ever-clever drumming on "Back in N.Y.C." (LP 2, Side 3, Track 1, November 1974's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway). 4) The all-in, all-band composition of the mostly instrumental "Los Endos", replete with thematically squonky, volcanic callbacks to prior tracks and other suppers past (LP 2, Side 4, Track 2, A Trick of the Tail). You can hear Peter Gabriel's enunciation more clearly and the fact that he was using a really good microphone, whatever it was. There's more character to the fuzz box in Steve Hackett's guitar it has a more distinct 'vowelly' tone and grainy decay... the new Analogue Productions 45 RPM LP reissue is not only the clear sonic winner, it's an absolute gift to everyone who has loved this album over the decades". - Frank Doris, Copper Magazine, Jan. 8, 2024. To read the full review, click here.\r\n \r\n Recorded in August 1973 the tour for Foxtrot (1972) having ended in May of that year Genesis' members joined for a short time to write new material which covered a number of themes, including the loss of English folk culture and an increased American influence. Hence the inspiration for the title Selling England by the Pound.\r\n \r\n Several tracks from the album became fan favorites and were featured as a regular part of the band's live setlist well into the 1980s. "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)", was released in February 1974 and became the band's first top 30 hit in the U.K. In 2012, the album ranked seventh in Rolling Stone's "Readers' Poll: Your Favorite Prog Rock Albums of All Time". Selling England by the Pound reached N° 3 on the U.K. charts and N° 70 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Albums chart.\r\n \r\n AllMusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that Genesis hadn't sacrificed its newfound immediacy of Foxtrot with that album's follow-up. They found ways to infuse with the delicate whimsy that was their calling card since the group began.\r\n \r\n "This, combined with many overt literary allusions the Tolkeinisms of the title of 'The Battle of Epping Forest' only being the most apparent gives this album a storybook quality. It plays as a collection of short stories, fables, and fairy tales, and it is also a rock record, which naturally makes it quite extraordinary as a collection, but also as a set of individual songs. Genesis has never been as direct as they've been on the fanciful yet hook-driven 'I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe') apart from the fluttering flutes in the fade-out, it could easily be mistaken for a glam single or as achingly fragile as on 'More Fool Me') sung by Phil Collins. It's this delicate balance and how the album showcases the band's narrative force on a small scale as well as large that makes this their arguable high-water mark". \r\n \r\n All the hallmarks of a top-notch Analogue Productions reissue are here for you to savor: Mastered directly from the original master tape by Bernie Grundman and cut at 45 RPM. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jackets with film lamination by Stoughton Printing. Whereas on the Analogue Productions, it had more of a distinctive sound to it and more of a presence". - "Urgent" track review from Foreigner 4, David Bianco, Safe & Sound Texas Audio Excursion, YouTube video\r\n \r\n Throughout the course of three late 70s albums, Foreigner (along with Journey and Styx) was recognized as one of the top AOR bands of the era. But the band was still looking for that grand slam of a record that would push them to the very top of the heap.\r\n \r\n Released in 1981, 4 would be that album, writes AllMusic.\r\n \r\n In producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange fresh off his massive success with AC/DC's Back in Black guitarist and all-around mastermind Mick Jones found both the catalyst to achieve this and his perfect musical soulmate. Lange's legendary obsessive attention to detail and Jones' highly disciplined guitar heroics (which he never allowed to get in the way of a great song) resulted in a collaboration of unprecedented, sparkling efficiency where not a single note is wasted.\r\n \r\n "Nightlife" kicks off a series of energetic and nearly flawless melodic rock songs on the album. Within this collection, you'll find tracks like "Woman in Black", "Don't Let Go", and the '50s-inspired "Luanne". However, the standout gem in this album is "Juke Box Hero". This song manages to be both a mainstream hit and exceptionally unique. It blends heavy metal guitar riffs, harmonized vocals, and lyrics that capture the desire to become a rock star.\r\n \r\n But there's more to this album. It also includes the essential power ballad, "Waiting for a Girl Like You". This emotional song transcended genres, becoming one of the most successful tearjerkers of the decade. It's a constant presence on soft rock radio and has overshadowed another beautiful ballad from the album called "Girl on the Moon".\r\n \r\n And let's not forget the surprising and funky "Urgent". This track stands out as one of the band's most memorable and uncharacteristic smash hits, thanks to Junior Walker's signature saxophone solo.\r\n \r\n As awesome as the music is this definitive deluxe 180 gram 45 RPM 2 LP package. Tailor-made for the airwaves, songs such as "Dirty White Boy" and "Head Games" kept Foreigner at the top of the arena rock heap as the decade came to a close; and the supergroup's successes would continue well into the '80s.\r\n \r\n In August 1979, the release of the album was preceded by its first single, the hard rock "Dirty White Boy, which peaked at N° 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album itself continued Foreigner's popularity, climbing to N° 5 on the Billboard 200 chart and receiving a platinum certification four months after it hit the stores. By now, Head Games has gained a 5× Platinum status for selling at least 5 million copies in the United States. The next singles were the title track and "Women", which reached N° 14 and 41, respectively.\r\n \r\n Head Games continued in the vein of Foreigner's previous successful albums, maintaining a consistent quality of music that fans had come to expect.\r\n \r\n We expect this definitive deluxe 180 gram 45 RPM 2 LP Analogue Productions (Atlantic Series) reissue of Head Games to find a prominent place in your most-listened-to album rotation. Double LP cut at 45 RPM, pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in a Stoughton Printing tip-on old style gatefold jacket. That's how you upgrade a classic. The collection of cover songs found the artist not only spotlighting his talent, but his tastes. Among the songs he chose to cover on the LP was Leon Russell's "A Song for You", taken from Russell's debut album which was barely a year old at the time. Hathaway's impassioned version is so strong that many listeners are still shocked to discover that the song is indeed a cover.\r\n \r\n With songs by Billy Preston "Little Girl", Mac Davis "I Believe in Music" and Van McCoy Gladys Knight and the Pips 1964 hit, "Giving Up", the record didn't exactly ignite the charts, peaking at N° 73 for the week of July 24, 1971 the N° 1 album in America that week: Carole King's Tapestry. Hathaway's second LP is so much more than its chart performance.\r\n \r\n Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler took over most of the production duties, with Hathaway producing one track, the self-penned "Take a Love Song". One of just three solo studio albums Hathaway recorded before his tragic death in 1979, Donny Hathaway is a truly timeless classic that will never go out of style.\r\n \r\n Pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in a tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing.
