"Liza With A 'Z'" is a multi-media production that has been showered with superlatives. It won numerous awards, including those for Choreography and Direction. However, a further award for the music composed by John Kander and Fred Ebb is probably the main reason for the show being released on a record, i.e. just for the ears. But the plan bore fruit, and the LP rocketed onto the Billboard 200. It was to be Liza Minnelli’s best chart hit ever – and it could even be called the soundtrack of her life.\r\n
      \r\n
Great favourites such as "Ring Them Bells" and "Bye Bye Blackbird" are set alongside sharp rhythm and blues numbers ("Son Of A Preacher Man", "I Gotcha"). Taking centre stage is a 10 minute medley from the film adaptation of the musical "Cabaret" that was shown in the cinemas also in 1972 and which brought Minnelli her international breakthrough.\r\n
      \r\n
All that remains of this costly and glamorous television event, which was only broadcast a few times on US television after the premiere, is the original music on record. Here it is once again in all its glory and with a new freshness.\r\n

      \r\n
Recorded between October and December 1984 and originally released in 1985, Birdy marks the first occasion that Peter worked with French-Canadian producer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Lanois who was fresh from working on The Unforgettable Fire with U2. The Alan Parker movie is the tale of a Vietnam vet who harbors Icarus-like ambitions to fly. The soundtrack finds Peter flexing his creative muscles free of any commercial pressures.\r\n

    -nom: "Spartacus Gayaneh"

    -description: """
Aram Khachaturian, the most well-known of all Armenian composers, believed that art should be closely bound to the people and indeed it was a pre-requisite for his own creative inspiration. Largely uninfluenced by the manifold trends of the 20th century, Khachaturian’s works reflect the folk heritage of his native country. In the two richly orchestrated ballets, which he himself later arranged into suites, we find the musical spirit and customs of an ancient culture. In particular the unrestrained exuberance of the Sabre Dance from Gayaneh has contributed to the immense popularity of this suite. The ballet Spartacus could be described as a monumental historical drama and made Khachaturian one of the Soviet Union’s most highly honoured composers.\r\n
      \r\n
That a slave uprising can not only be expressed in music but can also take place on an international dimension is admirably demonstrated by the maestro personally in this recording where Khachaturian takes on the role of leader of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.\r\n
      \r\n
This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. More information under http://www.pure-analogue.com. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.\r\n

LPs mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original master tapes.\r\n

      \r\n
Housed in a custom designed lift-off lid box.\r\n
      \r\n
David Clayton-Thomas landed in New York City in 1966, drawn from his native Canada to appear on the NBC network TV show "Hullabaloo" as a guest of fellow Canadian Paul Anka. Anka wanted a Canadian band to feature on the show and Clayton-Thomas fronted a jazz/rock band called The Bossmen - "we had the number one record in Canada at the time".\r\n
      \r\n
Clayton-Thomas returned to Toronto after the show but the creative scene in the Big Apple beckoned. He got a NYC gig playing guitar for John Lee Hooker - and in the funky clubs of Greenwich Village he met several founding members of what was to become a chart-dominating jazz fusion band with an utterly distinctive sound - Blood, Sweat & Tears.\r\n
      \r\n
For a brief period at the end of the 1960s and the start of the 1970s, Blood, Sweat & Tears, which fused a rock 'n' roll rhythm section to a horn section, stormed the pop charts. Clayton-Thomas joined this stellar group of musicians in 1969, bringing a handful of new songs as they delivered the monumental Grammy Album of the Year Blood, Sweat & Tears.\r\n
      \r\n
Now hear the music and read the complete story about how this legendary band succeeded, from the ultimate BS&T insider - David Clayton-Thomas himself! Bloodlines, from Analogue Productions captures the BS&T sound as never before, on four remastered LPs - Child Is Father To The Man, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Blood, Sweat & Tears 3 and Blood, Sweat & Tears 4. Each album was remastered from the original master tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound in New York, and each was plated and pressed on deluxe 200 gram heavyweight vinyl at our own Quality Record Pressings, maker of the world's finest-sounding LPs. The jackets - from Stoughton Printing - are top-of-the-line, old-style tip-on showcasing immaculately reproduced artwork. The whole set comes in a custom-designed deluxe slipcase.\r\n
      \r\n
For this special box set, David Clayton-Thomas was gracious enough to contribute a wonderfully-written essay telling the whole history of the band and its origins. The eight-piece band signed to Columbia Records and recorded Blood, Sweat & Tears' debut album, Child Is Father to the Man, which was released in February 1968. Cofounder Al Kooper then departed, and the group was reorganized. Singer David Clayton-Thomas was added, trombonist Dick Halligan moved to the keyboards, and trumpeters Chuck Winfield and Lew Soloff replaced Randy Brecker and Jerry Weiss, with Jerry Hyman being added on trombone. This nine-piece unit, working with producer James William Guercio, made Blood, Sweat & Tears' self-titled second album, released in January 1969.\r\n
      \r\n
Blood, Sweat & Tears was a runaway hit, spawning three gold-selling Top 10 singles, "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "Spinning Wheel", and "And When I Die", selling 3 million copies and winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.\r\n
      \r\n
Guercio left afterward to work on a similar musical concept with Chicago Transit Authority, and Blood, Sweat & Tears increasingly became a backup group for Clayton-Thomas. Nevertheless, the third album, Blood, Sweat & Tears 3 (1970), and the fourth, Blood, Sweat & Tears 4 (1971), were substantial hits.\r\n
      \r\n
This is a momentous box set presenting a historically-significant band in the deluxe fashion that it deserves. Like all of our Analogue Productions reissues, we've painstakingly sweated the details to bring you the utmost listening experience. Now you can listen to these cherished album favorites in the highest quality, as you gain insights into the band and its recordings from Clayton-Thomas' informative account of the band's history.\r\n

In-depth essay by lead singer David Clayton-Thomas highlights booklet with rare photos.\r\n
      \r\n
LPs mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original master tapes.\r\n
      \r\n

      \r\n
Housed in a custom designed lift-off lid box.\r\n
      \r\n
David Clayton-Thomas landed in New York City in 1966, drawn from his native Canada to appear on the NBC network TV show "Hullabaloo" as a guest of fellow Canadian Paul Anka. Anka wanted a Canadian band to feature on the show and Clayton-Thomas fronted a jazz/rock band called The Bossmen - "we had the number one record in Canada at the time."\r\n
      \r\n
Now hear the music and read the complete story about how this legendary band succeeded, from the ultimate BS&T insider - David Clayton - Thomas himself !
Singer David Clayton - Thomas was added, trombonist Dick Halligan moved to the keyboards, and trumpeters Chuck Winfield and Lew Soloff replaced Randy Brecker and Jerry Weiss, with Jerry Hyman being added on trombone.
Now you can listen to these cherished album favorites in the highest quality, as you gain insights into the band and its recordings from Clayton Thomas' informative account of the band's history.\r\n

In-depth essay by lead singer David Clayton-Thomas highlights booklet with rare photos.\r\n
      \r\n
LPs mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original master tapes.\r\n
      \r\n
Quality Record Pressings plating by Gary Salstrom, pressed on 200 gram audiophile vinyl.\r\n
      \r\n
Now hear the music and read the complete story about how this legendary band succeeded, from the ultimate BS&T insider - David Clayton - Thomas himself !
Singer David Clayton - Thomas was added, trombonist Dick Halligan moved to the keyboards, and trumpeters Chuck Winfield and Lew Soloff replaced Randy Brecker and Jerry Weiss, with Jerry Hyman being added on trombone.
Now you can listen to these cherished album favorites in the highest quality, as you gain insights into the band and its recordings from Clayton Thomas' informative account of the band's history.\r\n

    -description: """
Like all the works he composed during his extremely productive years in Vienna, Mozart’s last two symphonies are remarkable for their ambitious and demanding individuality, despite the fact that they were written in the amazingly short space of only six weeks. Any inference to the dire circumstances in which the composer was living at the time might possibly be detected in the grave character of Symphony N° 40 in G minor. The so-called Jupiter-Symphony, however, which owes its name to the Roman god, brims over with an endless joy of life. The powerful final movement with its combination of fugal technique, rondo and sonata form is quite rightly regarded as a unique compositional achievement in the classical era.\r\n
      \r\n
The Mozart specialist Carlo Maria Giulini, who only enters the recording studio when he is quite totally sure of a thing, has set down a performance here which does without orchestral fireworks and concentrates on a seemingly endless flow of melody. The orchestral playing is light, airy and unpretentious, the strings as soft as silk what more could Mozart have wished for.\r\n

Mozart wrote the Divertimento No. 1 at the age of six, while A Musical Joke and Eine kleine Nachtmusik were composed shortly before his death.\r\n
      \r\n
From what one hears, apparently only a few music lovers enjoy listening to Eine kleine Nachtmusik. Far too often has it been performed routinely rather than being filled with life. This recording is quite different: living up to his reputation, Karl Münchinger proves that this favourite can be imbued with significance. \r\n
      \r\n
The historical roote of the serenade lie in the suite which consists of varied contrasting dance movements. In the spirit of this tradition, Münchinger offers a clear and unfussed interpretation which is absolutely credible and has a freshness rarely heard. The ensemble plays both cheerfully and and wittily. In A Musical Joke, Mozart parodies amateurish composers of his own era, and the orchestra quite obviously participates in the fun.\r\n

Thanks to their undeniable musical talent, which allowed them to be taken seriously in the folk scene, the industrious Roche sisters’ career began when they were young. The duo began by singing Christmas carols, doo-wop song syllable puzzles, and tricky barbershop harmonies. They finally caught the attention of Paul Simon, who brought the gifted girls in as backup singers on his LP "There Goes Rhymin’ Simon", and was primarily responsible for the birth of their first recording. The lavishly produced album achieved high critical acclaim. Although it was a worthy professional debut, the public was hesitant to buy the album. The specialist magazine Rolling Stone commented drily and somewhat at a loss that the Roches weren’t everyone’s cup of tea.\r\n
      \r\n
Maggie and Terre Roche are a well-rehearsed vocal team however : with a range from hazy, finely balanced voices singing as one, right up to pearly, radiant brilliance, the Roche sisters enthusiastically penned a songbook which is almost without exception their very own creation. Mechanical bluegrass music "Wigglin’ Man", a steam-train character "If You Emptied ..." and a somewhat crude and unrefined country aura make the subtle lyrics easily accessible to all, but the LP also offers the listener wonderfully ill-humoured verse "The Mountain People" and story-like prose "West Virginia". This is a truly exceptional album, and well worth being discovered !\r\n

    -description: """
The 1967 Newport Jazz Festival, fourteenth in a world-famous series, was inexplicably the first at which Lionel Hampton had ever appeared. Better late than never, the great vibist and bandleader came, played and conquered. As the crowd roars ecstatically at the end of this record, the awed but happy voice of producer George Wein is heard: “This hasn’t happened since Duke...” he begins, casting back in his mind to 1956 and the nearest comparable triumph.\r\n
      \r\n
There is nothing quite so effective as a big band at an outdoor jazz festival. So the 1967 Newport programme included those of Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Don Ellis and Lionel Hampton. Lionel knew the competition he had to face, and knew that in the festival’s climatic spot—the last act on the last night--- his performance would be compared with those of all the others. He prepared accordingly.\r\n
      \r\n
Members of his Inner Circle, the octet with which he normally works, would provide the nucleus for an orchestra largely composed of alumni from his earlier bands. When the call went out to the Old Guard, the response was magnificent, as a glance at the personnel will show. Top names in the profession came back to join him, to form one of the great all-star bands of all time. A two week engagement at The Metropole in New York, immediately before the festival, served as a prolonged dress rehearsal, where the ensembles were polished and new arrangements familiarized. Enthusiasm mounted night by night in the Seventh Avenue club, among musicians and public alike, until Newport and the evening of 3rd July were reached. Then, as you will hear, the spirit was willing and the flesh far, far from weak.\r\n
      \r\n
All these preparations ensured a good performance, but the spark, the magic necessary to make it a great one, had to come from the leader. Everybody knows that he is a kind of rhythmic dynamo—driving, full of energy, unsparing of himself. His commitment and conviction communicate rapidly with any audience, so that it is soon won over to his side. Yet in the long, ninety minute program, errors in pacing would have been easy, forgivable, but extremely damaging. A climax reached too soon would have led to anti-climax, and a flat feeling as the crowd left the ground. As it was, Lionel’s long professional experience served him superbly, so that his program rose steadily and inexorably to the all-out, emotional frenzy of Flying Home. Like a good general, he never lost his grasp on the situation. He inspired his men by personal example on the vibes, reinforced the beat on a second set of drums, and finally brought up the reserves---Alan Dawson, Milt Buckner and Illinois Jacquet—at just the right time, and in the right spot, to secure an unforgettable triumph and a tumultuous ovation.\r\n

      Musicians :\r\n
Jack McDuff (organ, arranger), Fred Berry, King Kolax (trumpet), John Watson (trombone), Red Holloway (tenor saxophone), Danny Turner (tenor saxophone, flute), Lonnie Simmons (baritone saxophone), Bobby Christian (vibraphone, percussion), Roland Faulkner), Calvin Green (guitar), Loyal J. Gresham (electric bass), Joe Dukes, Bob Guthrie (drums), J. J. Jackson (conductor, arranger).\r\n
      \r\n
With these three words the great Clark Terry summed up the art of leaning musical improvisation. Salvador Dalí, the artist who melted time in his colorful and bizarre works, stated radically that a person who didn't want to copy others would never manage to accomplish anything at all.\r\n
       \r\n
Brother Jack McDuff did plenty of copying and refined the good old standards on his Tobacco Road and made them blossom anew. Jack taught himself to play the organ and went on to transform the popular melody "Alexander's Ragtime Band" into what one might call roughened up ball house jazz, were it not for the contrary saxophone, which soars over rasping organ clusters. For Brother Jack such spiritual sounds as in "And The Angels Sing" and his somewhat slanted version of the musing, dreamy "Wade In The Water" were an absolute must. It really rocks in "Can't Get Satisfied", a gospel-like and delicately instrumentalised version of the blues evergreen. The organ does not necessarily always have the last word in this colorful mixture, but it is always very present as regards the sound and the distribution of the parts. And just once does McDuff let the instrument sing out on its glassy top register in "The Shadow Of Your Smile".\r\n

      \r\n
It was 1958 when a passably successful R&B singer entered the recording studio with an all-star band to tape a dozen songs from the global repertoire of a legendary blues vocalist. The old-fashioned style in LaVern Baker’s tribute to Bessie Smith might seem somewhat strange in the midst of popular R&B numbers and the growing productivity of the Motown hit machines, but it certainly found favour with the public. And for a very good reason too ! Right from the very first number, "Gimme A Pigfoot", the snappy bass line conjures up the ballroom atmosphere of the Twenties. A bluesy dialogue with the trumpet ("Baby Doll", "I Ain’t Gonna Play No Second Fiddle"), alternating with robustly orchestrated swing rhythms ("On Revival Day"), and time and again cool, faltering blues ("Black Water Blues") guarantee great listening and entertainment. The great names in the band read like a Who Is Who of outstanding musicians Nat Pierce, Buck Clayton, Paul Quinichette, Urbie Green and Jimmy Cleveland, all who crown the fantastic sound of their performance with relaxed and easy-going solos and finely balanced background playing that would hardly be more authentic on a live stage. Fans of traditional big-band swing will love this album too. \r\n
