Live In Tokyo is exceptionally powerful acoustic hard bop, easily the equal of the electric and fusion experiments of the time -and proof positive that Tolliver, who astutely (and acutely) combined the best of both traditional swing and jazz throughout the 1970, remains one of the music's great-and most underrated". - Kevin Whitlock\r\n \r\n There's certainly a keen eye that goes into the joyous task of plunging through the Strata-East vaults and although Charles Tolliver and Music Inc's Live in Tokyo 1973 isn't as forgotten a treasure as previous Pure Pleasure reissues of projects like Stanley Cowell's ‘Such Great Friends' may be, it's no less of an incredible project to revisit in this way.\r\n \r\n Recorded Dec. 7, 1973, the fifth album by trumpeter Charles Tolliver and his quartet of musicians comprising Music Inc performed a 50 minute set in Tokyo's Yubinchokin Hall. The performance was initially released through Strata-East the following year and would even be revisited a further time by Mosaic Records in 2005 as part of a three-disc box set all of this a true testament to the masters of the craft gracing the stage on this night.Despite the slew of releases with Music Inc, Tolliver boasts an incredible resume that has seen him perform alongside luminaries including Horace Silver, Andrew Hill, Roy Ayers, Gary Bartz among others. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, and raised in New York from the age of 10 years old, Tolliver's inspired contributions to jazz couldn't be celebrated enough from his innumerable successes as a musician in his own right to his achievements as co-founder of Strata along with Stanley Cowell. Despite neither having any formal or business training, Tolliver and Cowell's pioneering efforts positioned them as beacons for being an independent, black-owned success story.\r\n \r\n With the Music Inc quartet comprised of bassist Clint Houston, drummer Clifford Barbaro and Stanley Cowell on piano, Tolliver and company present a set of five compositions including tracks from the pen of the trumpeter himself (‘Drought' and ‘Stretch') as well as a heralded rendition of ‘Round Midnight' initially composed by Thelonious Monk. Kicking the project off with the exquisite slow build of "Drought" which starts with Tolliver's trumpet holding court on centre stage while the glorious crescendo builds around him. "Stretch" eschews in another high-energy number before making way to the sublime lament of "Truth".\r\n \r\n Live in Tokyo 1973 is certainly a project that has been afforded its due reverence over the years but once again, an exceptional performance from Charles Tolliver and Music Inc benefits from an unrivalled presentation at the hands of Pure Pleasure. On the back of the record sleeve, Tolliver undersigned his mission statement : "Music Inc. was created out of the desire to assemble men able to see the necessity for survival of a heritage and an art in the hopes that the sacrifices and high level of communication between them will eventually reach every soul".\r\n \r\n And he isn't kidding. You won't find a much higher level of communication than he, Cecil McBee, Stanley Cowell, and Jimmy Hopps engaged in on May 1, 1970 at Slugs' in New York City. This was much more than an attempt to merely 'preserve acoustic jazz' as in the stilted Marsalis vein. This was an attempt to preserve a measure of authenticity while maintaining the notion of forward-thinking, present-tense improvised music. They deserved a greater response than the lukewarm, sparse applause they received that night, and continue to deserve a far more cognizant audience for their efforts.\r\n \r\n Tolliver 'Drought", McBee "Felicite", and Cowell "Orientale" each contribute a track to the set; though very much distinct, each is equally strong. "Felicite" is a more contemplative affair, a deeply felt and empathically performed piece; the unit here is in particularly sublime form, merging considerable skill with a staggering depth of emotion. "Orientale" falls somewhere in between the pace of the two, with Cowell's Eastern scales establishing an austere, industrious tone throughout its 17 1/2-minute length.\r\n \r\n Through its duration, the music on Live at Slugs' is often riveting and incessantly compelling. Always a presence on his recordings, Tolliver demonstrates tremendous range, flair, and command as a trumpeter and leader. Part two of the Slugs' date is just as impressive and again feature three originals all penned by the group. Here we get a better example of Tolliver's compositional work with the touching Coltrane tribute "Our Second Father". Again Tolliver's trumpet is simply stunning. The rhythm section of Cecil McBee and Jimmy Hopps also deserve mention as these two really drive the quartet along in a similar fashion to Garrison and Jones did with Coltrane. The McBee original Wilpan's also highlights the strength of McBee's writing and is probably the pick of the tunes here. \r\n """ -prixVente: "34.50" -delaiLivraison: App\Enum\TempsLivraisonEnum {#1834 …} -musicienOrchestre: "Charles Tolliver (trumpet), Stanley Cowell (piano), Cecil McBee (bass), Jimmy Hopps (drums)" -sonMusic: App\Enum\SonMusicEnum {#1133 …} -grammageMusic: App\Enum\GrammageMusicEnum {#1137 …} -rpmMusic: App\Enum\RPMMusicEnum {#1139 …} -lpsMusic: 1 -setBoxMusic: false -limitedEdition: true -preCommande: false -selectionAAD: false -extraitYoutube: "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haMdAiPZm0k" -referenceProduit: "Pure Pleasure Records SES 19720" -titreMorceau: [ [ "nom" => "1. I have to admit that I'm biased in favor of Charles Tolliver. He plays with a combination of strength and sweetness that goes beyond mere language. The fact that he is self taught is more miraculous. The recording is so good, one can hear the sound of a musician's fingertips accidentally brushing across the bass strings, for example. Alvin Queen is always brilliant on the drums.
