Following his six years with the seminal John Coltrane Quartet, and Coltrane's death in 1967, Jones signed with Blue Note and began a run of 10 impressive and wide-ranging albums that established his own legacy as a bandleader.\r\n \r\n Puttin' It Together found Jones in a trio with bassist Jimmy Garrison and multi-instrumentalist Joe Farrell, who is heard on tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute, and piccolo. The spare format let Farrell embark on fantastic solo flights in a lively three-way dialogue between the musicians with highlights including the enticing Brazilian tune "Reza", Garrison's playful "Sweet Little Maia", and Jones' rollicking dedication to his wife "Keiko's Birthday March".\r\n \r\n This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Optimal. Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, his friend, helped him sign with Atlantic Records and the label had him set up shop in Muscle Shoals, recording his debut album with that legendary set of studio musicians, known for their down-and-dirty backing work for Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett, among many other Southern soul legends.\r\n \r\n AllMusic writes : "The Muscle Shoals rhythm section, occasionally augmented by guitarist Duane Allman, gives this music genuine grit, but this isn't necessarily a straight-up blue-eyed soul record, even if the opening 'I'm Easy' and 'I'll Be Long Gone' are certainly as deeply soulful as anything cut at Muscle Shoals". Scaggs dabbled in country and blues along with the soul and R&B that grounds this record.\r\n \r\n The extended 11 minute blues workout "Loan Me a Dime", functions as much as a showcase for a blazing Duane Allman as it does for Boz. But even with that show-stealing turn, and even with the Muscle Shoals musicians giving this album its muscle and part of its soul, this album is still thoroughly a showcase for Boz Scaggs' musical vision. "Loan Me a Dime" is blues-rock classic. It showcased Scaggs' soulful vocals and Allman's remarkable guitar skills.\r\n \r\n Boz Scaggs' songs garnered significant radio airplay and helped introduce Boz Scaggs to a wider audience. This performance showcases one of the few undocumented Blakey bands, the New Jazzmen, featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, Nathan Davis on sax, and, of course, Blakey on drums.\r\n \r\n Freddie Hubbard's incendiary playing on "Blue Moon" and the blistering 24 minute version of his own "Crisis"\r\n shows that he was one of the most innovative trumpeters in jazz history.\r\n \r\n On this live session, the audiences seem to have been enthusiastic and appreciative. "Everywhere we'd go people would say, This is the best Jazz Messengers we've heard !", according to Davis. "And because of the way Jaki would play and Reggie would go, it was like a semi-freedom thing with Messengers heads, you know, but when we got to soloing... ! And Blakey was ridin' and floatin' the time... but he would always be loose enough to follow, to keep it going. Its members were hardly the Who’s Who of jazz, however. People vaguely knew that the leader had replaced Kenny Dorham in the Jazz Messengers, that Doug Watkins had played bass with them, and that pianist Walter Davis Jr. had been with Charlie Parker before he was 19. As for Art Taylor, if he’d already enjoyed a career longer than that of his colleagues, it hadn’t yet brought him recognition beyond a small circle of cognoscenti. Only Bobby Jaspar – who’d shone at the Club St. Germain – was famous with the Parisian audience.\r\n \r\n After appearing in Cannes (in the sun) and Knokke-le-Zoute (a much smaller audience) for almost three months, the Donald Byrd Quintet settled down for the autumn in one of the capital’s top jazz spots, the Chat Qui Pêche on the Rue de la Huchette. To crown a tour that had been extremely satisfying for everyone, a concert at the Olympia theatre was organised (there were gigs there called “Jazz Wednesdays”). Byrd and Co. took things very seriously, even though they preserved the relaxed approach that their (relatively) long association now permitted: La Marseillaise, and And the angels sing are both present in the introduction to Parisian Thoroughfare played by the two horns. The latter then went on to imitate other horns, those of the cars on 52nd Street… However, when it came to Stardust, it was with all the seriousness in the world, almost in meditation in fact, that Donald Byrd improvised over the backing provided by just Walter Davis Jr. and Doug Watkins. Bobby Jaspar, of course, was marvellous. If he showed a marked obedience to Sonny Rollins, he still preserved, intact, the virtues of sobriety that prevented him falling into the trap of serving up torrents of notes in pieces taken at a rapid tempo (At This Time, for example). During the exchanges on Formidable, you’d be forgiven for saying that he gets the better of Donald Byrd. As for the complicity that reigned between the members of the rhythm section, it gave the formation a homogenous character that was very rare in a quintet.\r\n \r\n Now, almost half a century later, one can only agree with Jazz Magazine’s critic on the subject of the Donald Byrd Quintet: “The only thing missing (…) was the consecration that a great concert in Paris would bring. | Input props | [ "produit" => App\Entity\Produit {#2226 -id: 2136 -nom: "Chet Baker in Paris, Vol. 2" -informationComplementaire: null -description: """ - Limited edition 180 gram French reissue !\r\n - Remastered from the original master tapes !\r\n - Pressed by Optimal in Germany; artwork using the original photos !\r\n \r\n In the tradition of labels wholly devoted to vinyl re-pressing, Sam Records puts out a product of top-notch musical and visual quality. Sam Records uses only master tapes and re-creates record covers using the original photographs, paintings and / or drawings. That generally involves some painstaking detective work, so it's a job for conscientious professionals, not corner-cutting amateurs.\r\n \r\n This Chet Baker reissue uses the original photos from Jean-Pierre Leloir, and is remastered from the original master tapes. Edition limited to 750 copies, on 180 gram vinyl pressed by Optimal in Germany.\r\n \r\n This LP comes with a large-sized high-quality print of a photograph from the archives of Jean-Pierre Leloir. \r\n \r\n The session was recorded at Studio Pathe-Magellan in Paris, Monday, October 24, 1955. By that date only Jimmy Bond was still with Chet. Peter Littman had returned to America, and his seat was now occupied by Nils-Bertil "Bert" Dahlander, a Swedish drummer who'd accompanied Lars Gullin. At the keyboard was an almost-unknown pianist named Gerard Gustin who'd just been signed to a contract by Eddie Barclay. Given the context, they were obliged to fall back on standards. Chet knew how to play these better than anyone. He chose eight : "These Foolish Things", which stayed in his quartet's repertoire for a while; plus five others that the trumpeter performs here for the first time "There's a Small Hotel", "Autumn In New York", "Summertime", "You Go To My Head", "Tenderly"; and two "I'll Remember April" and "Lover Man" that he'd done less than ten days earlier together with Lars Gullin and Dick Twardzik, whose disappearance was still something Chet refused to accept.
