The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was' admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. \r\n
Pianist McCoy Tyner had been increasingly looking to Mother Africa for inspiration on his Blue Note recordings of the late-1960s on pieces such as "African Village" and "Message from the Nile". With his 1970 album Asante, Tyner brought those influences to the fore with a powerful set rooted in the swirling percussive rhythmic bed laid by drummer Billy Hart and percussionist Mtume. Bassist Buster Williams, guitarist Ted Dunbar, and alto saxophonist Andrew White make up the rest of the extraordinary ensemble on this four-song set that also includes the ethereal vocals of Songai on the extended album opener "Malika" and the title track. While elements of the modal jazz that Tyner pioneered in the John Coltrane Quartet course through the album, most prominently on the kinetic closing track "Fulfillment", the music here also pointed towards future creative directions that Tyner would explore.

    -description: """

Though he first recorded in the late-1940s, Dexter Gordon's 1961 signing to Blue Note Records marked the beginning of a career renaissance for the great tenor saxophonist after a tumultuous decade. With the swift one-two punch of his label debut Doin' Allright and Dexter Calling, recorded just three days apart in May 1961, Dexter solidified his return to form with aplomb. Dexter Calling featured an entirely different band with Dexter holding forth at the helm of a potent quartet with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The set opens with the soulful hard bop gem "Soul Sister" before shifting into high gear and proving his dexterity on hard-charging numbers such as "Modal Mood", "I Want More", and "Clear the Dex". Gordon slows down for the stunning ballad "Ernie's Tune" before closing the set with Charlie Chaplin's joyous "Smile".

    -description: """

The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was' admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a.k.a. the "Tone Poet", on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.\r\n
      \r\n

Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a.k.a. the "Tone Poet", on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.\r\n
      \r\n
The great unsung trumpeter Kenny Dorham was a vital part of the early Blue Note story appearing as a sideman on bebop dates by Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey as well as foundational hard bop sessions with Horace Silver and as a founding member of The Jazz Messengers. In fact, just six months after The Jazz Messengers cut their landmark namesake live recordings at the Cafe Bohemia, Dorham brought his own sextet into the fabled NYC jazz club in May 1956 to record his maiden live recording date under his own name. Presented in full on the 3LP Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of "The Complete ‘Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia" the sublime set features the trumpeter with J.R. Monterose on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Arthur Edgehill on drums for an inspired collection of originals by Dorham, Monk, and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as choice Great American Songbook standards.\r\n
      \r\n
Produced for release by Joe Harley, the vinyl is all-analog and cut directly from Rudy Van Gelder's original master tapes by Kevin Gray. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl at RTI, the three LPs come packaged in a deluxe tip-on trifold jacket which includes a booklet with never-before-seen photos by Francis Wolff and an in-depth essay and track-by-track analysis by Syd Schwartz.

      \r\n
1969's Mother Ship, the final Blue Note album by visionary organist Larry Young, was the culmination of a tremendous run of records albums that redefined the sonic possibilities of the Hammond B3 organ. On his highly regarded 1965 album Unity, Young pushed the limits of his instrument into the far reaches of post-bop exploration. First released in 1980 as part of the LT Series, Mother Ship featured Lee Morgan on trumpet, Herbert Morgan on tenor saxophone, and Eddie Gladden on drums. The album bristles with unbridled kinetic energy while still delivering soulful grooves on a set of Young originals from the avant-garde tinged excursions of the title track and "Trip Merchant" to the in-the-pocket soul jazz of "Street Scene", "Visions", and "Love Drops".\r\n

The brawny tenor saxophonist Fred Jackson first appeared on a Blue Note record with his standout sideman performance on organist Baby Face Willette's Face To Face in 1961 and would later add his full-throttled sound to Big John Patton's Blue Note albums Along Came John and The Way I Feel. In 1962, Jackson recorded his own leader debut for the label with Hootin' ‘N Tootin', a deeply soulful set of hot-blooded originals performed by a muscular 4 piece band with guitarist Willie Jones, drummer Wilbert Hogan, and organist Earl Van Dyke, who would later become part of Motown house band the Funk Brothers.\r\n

      - Fred Jackson "Hootin' N' Tootin'" 180 gram LP !\r\n

The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was' admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a.k.a. the "Tone Poet", on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.\r\n
      \r\n
      \r\n
This stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI), and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.

After his melancholy masterpiece In The Wee Small Hours, the legendary vocalist Frank Sinatra brightened the mood considerably with his exuberant album Songs For Swingin' Lovers! released on Capitol Records in 1956. The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was' admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a.k.a. the "Tone Poet," on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.\r\n
      \r\n
One of the boldest statements in the Andrew Hill discography, 1965's Compulsion was the pianist's expression of the avant-garde through the prism of jazz music's roots in African rhythms. Hill's percussive piano drives an intrepid ensemble through four evocative originals "Compulsion", "Legacy", "Premonition", and "Limbo" given deeply engaged performances by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, saxophonist John Gilmore, bassists Cecil McBee and Richard Davis, drummer Joe Chambers, and percussionists Nedi Qamar and Renaud Simmons.\r\n

      \r\n
When listening to Lee Morgan blow his molten solo on "A Night In Tunisia", the opening track of The Cooker, it's hard to fathom that he was only 19 years old at the time. Recorded just two weeks after Morgan's dazzling performance on John Coltrane's masterpiece Blue Train in September 1957, The Cooker was in fact Morgan's fifth Blue Note album as a leader. BassistPaul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones (both of whom also played on Blue Train) are joined by baritone saxophone master Pepper Adams and the great Bobby Timmons on piano on this superbly swinging session.\r\n

Blue Note Records has announced the continuation of the acclaimed Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series in 2020. Launched in 2019 in honor of the label's 80th Anniversary, the Tone Poet series is produced by Joe Harley (from Music Matters) and features all-analog, 180 gram audiophile vinyl reissues that are mastered from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio. Tone Poet vinyl is manufactured at RTI in Camarillo, CA, and packaged in deluxe Stoughton Printing "Old Style" gatefold Tip-On jackets. The titles were once again handpicked by Harley and cover the crème de la crème of the Blue Note catalog along with underrated classics, modern era standouts, and albums from other labels under the Blue Note umbrella including Pacific Jazz and United Artists Records. Every aspect of these Blue Note / Tone Poet releases is done to the highest-possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version.\r\n
      \r\n
      \r\n
"The LPs are mastered directly from the original analog master tapes by Kevin at his incredible facility called Cohearent Mastering. We go about it in the exact same way that we did for so many years for the Music Matters Blue Note reissues. We do not roll off the low end, boost the top or do any limiting of any kind. We allow the full glory of the original Blue Note masters to come though unimpeded ! Short of having an actual time machine, this is as close as you can get to going back and being a fly on the wall for an original Blue Note recording session". - Joe Harley

Just two months after recording his exceptional sextet date Cornbread, the prolific trumpeter Lee Morgan was back in Van Gelder Studio in November 1965 with a slightly slimmed down but no less robust quintet line-up to record his next session Infinity, which wouldn't be first released until 1981. Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean and drummer Billy Higgins both of whom were featured on Cornbread were at Morgan's side once again along with pianist Larry Willis and bassist Reggie Workman for a five-song set that ventured to the far reaches of the hard bop tradition and beyond. Four compelling Morgan originals and McLean's engaging ballad "Portrait of Doll" cover a wide expanse of musical terrain including the probing title track, the laid-back 6/8 groove of "Miss Nettie B", the intricate interlaced lines of "Growing Pains", and the hard-charging closer "Zip Code".

Recorded in 1955 for producer Tom Wilson's short-lived Boston-based label Transition Records, Byrd's Eye View was trumpeter Donald Byrd's first issued recording as a leader. The date presented Byrd at the helm of what was then the current lineup of The Jazz Messengers with tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Horace Silver, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Art Blakey. Local Boston area trumpeter Joe Gordon joins the band for some friendly brass sparring with Byrd on several numbers, further adding to the album's jovial air of a blowing session.\r\n
      \r\n
Everyone is in fine form on this five-song set with Side A consisting of an extended stroll through Watkins' laid-back original "Doug's Blues" followed by some inspired trading between Byrd and Gordon on "El Sino". A beautiful rendition of the ballad "Everything Happens To Me" and two swinging Mobley pieces comprise Side B, bringing this highly-enjoyable date to a close.

      \r\n

Trumpeter Lee Morgan was just 19 years old and still early on in his lengthy Blue Note association when he cut his brightly swinging album City Lights in August 1957. The date featured a wonderful sextet with Curtis Fuller on trombone, George Coleman on alto and tenor saxophone, Ray Bryant on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The brilliant young trumpet prodigy was still turning heads with his show-stealing performances as part of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, and this excellent 5 song set presented further evidence of his irrepressible talent. The album includes three compositions by Morgan's mentor Benny Golson "City Lights", "Tempo De Waltz", "Just By Myself" as well as a stunning ballad performance of the standard "You're Mine You" and the groovy closer "Kin Folk" by Gigi Gryce.
