Ray Charles' 1959 album What'd I Say popularized Charles' first Top 10 hit, "What I'd Say" and became his first gold-selling record. The tune was written on the fly by the American singer, songwriter, pianist and composer during a 1958 live show.\r\n
      \r\n
Indeed, "What'd I Say" stands as one of the most recognizable and enduring songs of the 20th century. Its electrifying combination of gospel fervor, bluesy sensuality, and soulful exuberance sent shockwaves through the music industry. Daringly different, wildly sexy Ray Charles' gritty, impassioned vocals combined with his virtuosic piano playing created an irresistible groove that had listeners dancing in the aisles.\r\n
      \r\n
In addition to the title track, the album boasts other standout songs like "Tell Me How Do You Feel", "Rockhouse", and "Roll with My Baby", each showcasing Ray Charles' unmatched ability to infuse his music with raw emotion and soulful authenticity.\r\n
      \r\n
"What'd I Say" became an instant classic and a commercial juggernaut. Notably, it was a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at N° 6. \r\n
The Genius of Ray Charles, his sixth studio album, released in 1959 by Atlantic Records, eschewed the the soul sound of his 1950s recordings, which fused jazz, gospel, and blues, for swinging pop with big band arrangements.\r\n
      \r\n
Charles is joined bymany ringers from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands for the first half of this program, featuring Charles belting out six songs arranged by Quincy Jones. "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Deed I Do" are highlights, and there are solos by tenorman David "Fathead" Newman, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, and (on "Two Years of Torture") tenor Paul Gonsalves. The remaining six numbers are ballads, with Charles backed by a string orchestra arranged by Ralph Burns (including "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'"). Charles' voice is heard throughout in peak form, giving soul to even the veteran standards.\r\n
      \r\n
Pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in a tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing.

      \r\n
Ray Charles' self-titled 1957 album was one of the first handful of LPs issued by Atlantic (and was later retitled Hallelujah I Love Her So). As AllMusic reviewer Bruce Elder notes, the album is weighted about three to one in favor of Charles' own compositions, with the hits "Hallelujah I Love Her So" and the pounding, soaring "Ain't That Love", which opens the LP, its raison d'etre.\r\n
      \r\n
Charles does just as well with his interpretations of others' work, most notably the ominous, gospel-focused rendition of "Sinner's Prayer" (which offers a virtuoso piano performance, and comes courtesy of the pen of Charles' former mentor Lowell Fulson) and Henry Glover's wrenching ballad "Drown in My Own Tears", which is topped out on each verse by a gorgeous chorus. "Funny (But I Still Love You)" offers a guitar break played in such an understated fashion that it almost doesn't seem so much a part of R&B as it was usually being offered in 1957 as it does a part of Charles' early career output.\r\n
      \r\n
The second side of the LP is even better, opening with the title track, a number that is almost too ubiquitous in its various cover versions the original has a mix of urgency and playfulness that's absolutely bracing, and the album carries this mood forward with "Mess Around", an Ahmet Ertegun-authored piano- and sax-driven romp with Charles at his most ebullient as a singer. "This Little Girl of Mine" offers him in a surprisingly light, almost acrobatic vocal mode, while "Greenbacks" is a knowing, clever cautionary narrative that is almost a throwback to 1940s-style R&B. "Don't You Know" is as salacious a piece of R&B as one was likely to hear in 1957, and "I Got a Woman" closes the record out on a pounding, driving note.\r\n
      \r\n

Genius doesn't even begin to describe the greatness of 1961 collection The Genius Sings the Blues. Comprised of a dozen songs Ray Charles made between 1952 and 1960, the collection was released in 1961 by Atlantic Records to counter the singer's migration to rival ABC Paramount.\r\n
      \r\n
What Atlantic originally underestimated is that the album contained many of Charles' greatest works, all unified by their bluesy emotions and stirring arrangements. A classic of the soul and R&B canon, The Genius Sings the Blues is a snapshot of the evolution of timeless American music captured by the pianist's indelible rhythmic pace, gospel roots, jazz backgrounds, and Southern-styled accents.\r\n
      \r\n
The cover tunes here "Early In The Mornin'", "The Midnight Hour", "I'm Movin' On", "Feelin' Sad", "The Right Time" are wonderful. But it's Charles' own, self-penned blues that steal the spotlight: "Ray's Blues", "I Believe To My Soul", "Nobody Cares", "Mr. Charles' Blues", "Some Day Baby", and "I Wonder Who".\r\n
      \r\n
The Genius Sings the Blues is a must-have for any Ray Charles fan, offering a raw and electrifying showcase of Charles' ability to convey pain and joy simultaneously. His legendary piano playing is front and center, with bluesy riffs and rolling chords that define Ray's unique style. With a rich backing band, including soulful horns and grooving rhythms, the album delivers an authentic and deeply felt blues experience. It's a testament to the soul of a true musical pioneer.\r\n

Ray Charles was best known for his work in the idioms of R&B, rock 'n' roll and even successful forays into country. But he also recorded influential jazz albums, including the groundbreaking Genius + Soul = Jazz originally released in 1961. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, in late 1960, Genius + Soul = Jazz was produced by Creed Taylor and includes arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. Ray Charles played the organ with three vocals "I've Got News For You," "I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town" and "One Mint Julep" and band members included members of the Count Basie Orchestra : Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Billy Mitchell, Frank Wess, Freddie Green and Sonny Payne among others. \r\n
      \r\n
The record ascended to the N° 4 spot on Billboard's pop album chart and spawned the very first singles on Impulse. "I've Got News For You" rose to N° 8 R&B and N° 66 on the Hot 100. In addition, Charles' version of "One Mint Julep" charted N° 1 R&B and No. 8 pop and his rendition of the blues standard "I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town" reached N° 25 R&B and No. 84 pop.\r\n
      \r\n
Although Basie himself does not appear on the album, the Count was a major model as Charles assembled a full-scale, working orchestra. Basie also influenced his use of organ in a jazz context, and Charles was happy to record at the Van Gelder studio, where Jimmy Smith had recorded his classic Blue Note albums. Truly, as Dick Katz wrote in his original January 1961 liner notes, "The combination here of rare talent plus uncommon craftsmanship has produced a record that showcases the timeless quality an innate taste that is uniquely that of Ray Charles".
