Their first concert in the Netherlands was held on February 26 in the legendary Concertgebouw Hall in Amsterdam, usually reserved for performances of classical music.\r\n \r\n Since 1951 and the collaboration between Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, the band had gained a stunning reputation. In 1954, Dave Brubeck was featured on the cover of Time magazine. Rumor has it that Duke Ellington knocked on Brubeck's hotel door to congratulate him. Brubeck is said to have responded, "It should have been you." He dedicated one of his most famous pieces, "The Duke," included on this album, to his fellow pianist.\r\n \r\n That winter evening of 1958, the four American musicians, all in their late thirties, took the stage of the Concertgebouw.\r\n \r\n Picture the packed auditorium murmuring expectantly, and four musicians overcome with stage fright yet eager to perform. After some timid applause, Desmond kicked off with the melancholy, sophisticated theme of "Two Part Contention". The piano came in, sounding out a counter-melody that revealed Brubeck's classical training and knowledge of counterpoint, acquired when he studied under Milhaud and Schoenberg. He had an inventiveness that was not only melodic but also rhythmic, and he knew how to win over an audience. This was followed by a Disney piece, "Someday, My Prince Will Come" introduced by the piano, three years before the great Miles Davis brought out his eponymous album. They continued with a 1930s standard, "These Foolish Things", by Jack Strachey, a song that had helped make Ella Fitzgerald famous. Paul led the show in his flowing, ethereal style, with sporadic brassy, dissonant contrasts, proving if proof were needed his consummate skills in harmonic phrasing.\r\n \r\n The saxophone then announced the theme of "One Moment Worth Years". Eugene, who liked to be called "the Senator", seemed to lead the private dialogue with an unseen hand, dexterous and sensitive. In the same vein, they led on with "For All We Know" to thunderous applause. It was now Joe's turn to take the limelight. When he played "Watusi Drums", the audience discovered an exceptional drummer who had started out as a virtuoso violinist: 15 years previously, he had been playing Mendelssohn's Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After hearing Jascha Heifetz, he decided he could never reach the maestro's heights and switched to drums. The band went on to play "The Wright Groove", a short piece written by Eugene. The concert concluded with "The Duke", a tribute to Ellington, and then a superb rendition of "Take the A-Train", a 1940s classic and the hallmark piece of Ellington's orchestra, played here in a whirlwind of energy and innovative rhythms. With their rhythmic patterns, interspersed with one or two bursts of resounding laughter, the musicians displayed the creative spirit that was to result in the legendary album Time Out a year later.\r\n \r\n Sadly, the original tape comes to a halt before the end of this piece could be recorded. Nevertheless, we have chosen to retain the surviving part to bear witness to the groundbreaking creativity then bubbling under the surface in this exceptional quartet's timeless art.\r\n \r\n The concert inaugurated a triumphant career in Europe. It announced, loud and clear, the communicative enthusiasm that was the lasting hallmark of these four exceptional musicians. Heavy-duty chipboard shell stock by Stoughton Printing !\r\n - 180 gram LP cut at 33 1/3 RPM by Bernie Grundman and pressed at Quality Record Pressings !\r\n - Praise for the 180 gram 45 RPM version of Analogue Productions' Time Out reissue !\r\n \r\n "The results speak for themselves: the platters from QRP are in my experience the most consistently flat and quiet being pressed today ... at least for the foreseeable here and now, Analogue Productions' newly mastered 45 RPM (Brubeck) is the edition to own. You'll hear it right from the familiar piano intro to "Blue Rondo a la Turk," where Brubeck's playing seems richer, more lyrical, more rhythmically alive. It seems to me that as our gear gets ever more quiet, these QRP LPs continue to wring more musical nuance from the finest recordings". - Music = 5/5; Sound = 5/5 - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound, January 2013.\r\n \r\n “I've now heard a number of LPs from Quality Record Pressings (QRP), Chad Kassem's year-and-a-half-old record-pressing plant. Before Time Out, I would have said that some positive trends were apparent from the earlier LPs I've heard. However, this current pressing is so much better than those that came before it, which were certainly very good, that it's obvious things have improved considerably over the past year. It's a positive sign when the noise floor is defined by the hiss of the master tape, not the quality of the pressing or vinyl, and that's the case here. Having heard many, many Pallas and RTI pressings, the main competition for QRP, I would say that QRP pressings combine the strengths of both its competitors: the very low surface noise and bottom-of-the-groove quiet of Pallas LPs and the sharp delineation of musical detail of RTI". - Sound = 4.5/5; Music = 5/5 - Marc Mickelson, The Audio Beat, August 2012.\r\n \r\n Virtually all serious and even casual music lovers ought to be familiar with, or at least are likely to have heard The Dave Brubeck Quartet, even without realizing it - for the quartet's best-known hit "Take Five" has graced the soundtracks of multiple films, including "Mighty Aphrodit", "Pleasantville" and "Constantine".\r\n \r\n The piece is famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody, as well as its use of unusual 5/4 time - so distinctive, it's a rare jazz track that became a pop hit.\r\n \r\n Including the monster hit "Take Five," the Brubeck Quartet's Time Out is a jazz and audiophile classic. Every album collection needs a copy. And now, cut at 33 1/3 RPM on 180 gram premium vinyl, pressed at Quality Record Pressings (Acoustic Sounds' own industry-lauded LP manufacturer), Analogue Productions brings you Time Out renewed.\r\n \r\n Like its 45 RPM sibling, Time Out is presented here packaged in a deluxe gatefold jacket. Inside are eight fantastic black and white images shot during the recording session at Columbia's famous 30th Street Studios. Sony Music supplied the images for use in our SACD reissue, and gave us persmission to use them in our LP reissue as well.\r\n \r\n The jacket is also special - very heavy-duty. It's produced for us by Stoughton Printing featuring a printed wrap mounted to a heavyweight chipboard shell, producing an authentic "old school" look and feel. This jacket is a beauty ! Never has Time Out's colorful iconic cover art looked so vibrant.\r\n \r\n The record label's sales executives didn't want a painting on the cover when Time Out debuted in 1959 on Columbia Records, Brubeck told an interviewer. An entire album of originals ? That wouldn't work either, he was told. Some standards and some show tunes were needed in the mix. Fortunately, Brubeck ignored the conventional wisdom and Time Out became the original classic we know it as today. Brubeck became proof that creative jazz and popular success can go together.\r\n \r\n The album was intended as an experiment using musical styles Brubeck discovered abroad while on a United States Department of State-sponsored tour of Eurasia. In Turkey, he observed a group of street musicians performing a traditional Turkish folk song that was played in 9/8 time, a rare meter for Western music.\r\n \r\n Paul Desmond, who was Brubeck's alto saxophonist, wrote "Take Five", at Brubeck's urging to try and write a song in quintuple (5/4) time. \r\n \r\n "I told Paul to put a melody over (drummer) Joe Morello's beat", Brubeck explained. As a jazz pianist, Brubeck became a household name in jazz in part due to Time Out's success. Demond's cool-toned alto and quick wit fit in well with Brubeck's often heavy chording and experimental playing. Morello and bassist Gene Wright completed the group. The Quartet traveled and performed constantly around the world until breaking up in 1967 to pursue other musical ventures.\r\n \r\n Time Out peaked at N° 2 on the Billboard pop albums chart and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. "Take Five" became a mainstream hit, reaching N° 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, and N° 5 on Billboard's Easy Listening survey, the precursor to today's Adult Contemporary charts. The song was included in countless movies and television soundtracks and still receives significant radio play. Heavy-duty chipboard shell stock by Stoughton Printing !\r\n - 180 gram, double LP set cut at 45 RPM by Bernie Grundman and pressed at Quality Record Pressings !\r\n \r\n "The results speak for themselves: the platters from QRP are in my experience the most consistently flat and quiet being pressed today ... at least for the foreseeable here and now, Analogue Productions' newly mastered 45 RPM (Brubeck) is the edition to own. You'll hear it right from the familiar piano intro to "Blue Rondo a la Turk", where Brubeck's playing seems richer, more lyrical, more rhythmically alive. - Sound = 4.5/5; Music = 5/5 - Marc Mickelson, The Audio Beat, August 2012\r\n \r\n Virtually all serious and even casual music lovers ought to be familiar with, or at least are likely to have heard The Dave Brubeck Quartet, even without realizing it for the quartet's best-known hit "Take Five" has graced the soundtracks of multiple films, including "Mighty Aphrodite", "Pleasantville" and "Constantine".\r\n The piece is famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody, as well as its use of unusual 5/4 time so distinctive, it's a rare jazz track that became a pop hit.\r\n \r\n Including the monster hit "Take Five", the Brubeck Quartet's Time Out is a jazz and audiophile classic. Every album collection needs a copy. And now, cut at 45 RPM on 180 gram premium vinyl, pressed at Quality Record Pressings (Acoustic Sounds' own industry-lauded LP manufacturer), Analogue Productions brings you the definitive copy.\r\n \r\n Why definitive ? The dead-quiet double-LP, with the music spread over four sides of vinyl, reduces distortion and high frequency loss as the wider-spaced grooves let your stereo cartridge track more accurately. But it's more than just the vinyl that makes this release so special. For the first time in its history, Time Out is presented here packaged in a deluxe gatefold jacket. Inside are eight fantastic black and white images shot during the recording session at Columbia's famous 30th Street Studios. Sony Music supplied the images for use in our SACD reissue, and gave us persmission to use them in our LP reissue as well.\r\n \r\n The jacket is also special very heavy-duty. It's produced for us by Stoughton Printing featuring a printed wrap mounted to a heavyweight chipboard shell, producing an authentic "old school" look and feel. This jacket is a beauty! Never has Time Out's colorful iconic cover art looked so vibrant.\r\n \r\n The record label's sales executives didn't want a painting on the cover when Time Out debuted in 1959 on Columbia Records, Brubeck told an interviewer. Originally released at the height of the duo's career in fall 1983, the 12 song set functions as a time machine back into an era when Daryl Hall and John Oates dominated the charts with songs that have long since become standards. View his review here.\r\n \r\n Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds are proud to continue the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds series for 2023 with seven album releases from the Contemporary Records catalog, celebrating 70 years of the legendary jazz label. The releases are supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, the world's largest source for audiophile recordings.\r\n \r\n Each title, originally engineered by Roy DuNann and/or Howard Holzer, features all-analog mastering from the original tapes by legendary engineer Bernie Grundman (himself a former employee of the label), as well as unsurpassed audiophile pressing on 180 gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, presented in a Stoughton Printing old-style tip-on jacket.\r\n \r\n The series highlights gems from Contemporary's extraordinary catalog and features artists who both defined and expanded the sound of West Coast jazz.\r\n \r\n American bassist Curtis Counce recorded the memorably-titled You Get More Bounce with Curtis Counce! in 1956 and 1957 for its release on the Contemporary label. The program features the underrated by talented Curtis Counce Quintet of 1956-1957, a group consisting of bassist/leader Counce, trumpeter Jack Sheldon, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Carl Perkins, and drummer Frank Butler. Counce contributed two originals but otherwise the band sticks to jazz standards, with some of the best moments being on "Too Close for Comfort", "Mean to Me", and Charlie Parker's "Big Foot". 4 Stars, AllMusic.\r\n \r\n Founded in 1951 by film producer, screenwriter and record collector Lester Koenig (1917-1977), Contemporary Records became the epicenter of the West Coast jazz scene, while its cutting-edge approach to sound and design attracted some of the era's most exciting artists. The Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds series which launched in the spring of 2022 with titles by Art Pepper, Barney Kessel and Benny Carter, among others honors the label's rich legacy through meticulous reissues that highlight the label's influential classics, as well as its must-hear rarities.\r\n \r\n Since its initial rollout, the series has earned accolades from a slew of outlets, including JazzTimes, which spoke to the impact of the label, reflecting: "Artists, producers, and engineers alike have held Contemporary aloft... as a label dedicated to presenting jazz at its absolute purest, richest, and live-est", adding that the new reissues "are living, breathing proof of that label's hotly cutting clarity". Audiophile Review, meanwhile, marveled at the stereo pressing of Art Pepper + Eleven : Modern Jazz Classics, which it called "top-notch", elaborating that it sounds "richer and more inviting... deliver[ing] a bit more cinemascopic ‘view' of the group". Praising Hampton Hawes' Four! as "pristine". Audiophile Audition added, "Kudos to Craft Recordings for re-introducing a brilliant pianist".
